About the Artist

Julian Gordon Mitchell was born in Reading in 1968. Julian began drawing and painting at an early age, fascinated by the work of Leonardo da Vinci and Durer. After a foundation course at Heatherley’s School of Art, he went on to study painting at Wolverhampton. He later completed a Masters Degree at Brighton University in the early 90’s and has maintained a working studio since then.

Julian’s imagination has been partly informed by an upbringing in the Seventh Day Adventist community – a religious sect preoccupied with the strange prophecies of Daniel and the Book of Revelation. This sensibility was later refined by an impassioned interest in 18th century cartoons, English portraits of the grand style and mid-20th century illustration.

There is a hidden dichotomy amongst his works. Julian’s art creates a bridge for art lovers of the old masters and those who desire a contemporary twist.

Julian has produced a body of work that includes paintings of surreal still life, Gothic conversation pieces, fanciful portraits all subjects adorned in fashions spanning the centuries.

This is Contemporary Art that connects with the best of the past.

Paintings by Julian can be found in collections in the UK and internationally. Julian has featured in exhibitions in the UK and worldwide including Solo shows, art galleries and prestigious auction houses.
